A Leap into the Void: Craft, Imagination & Duende

The Lyric Poem - Exploring the Sacred

In Lorca’s essay, “Theory and Play of the Duendehe argues that the angel (light) and the Muse (inspiration), are not the source of an art’s real power.  Instead, duende is key.  He uses Goethe’s definition: A mysterious force that everyone feels and no philosopher has explained.  Lorca goes describing it as enigmatic, a shape-shifter that often appears in the presence of danger which drew Hemingway to the concept.  He thought of the bullfighter in this way, the song between the bullfighter and the bull a conte jondo or deep song Duende has also been connected with the deep edgy passion of the flamenco dancer.

This workshop will look at ways of accessing that force, as we examine poems and poem drafts written by others. Once we feel we’re on solid footing, we will turn to our own work. For this part of the workshop, please bring a poem draft that you feel is giving you trouble or isn’t at the level that you want it to be. Please bring five copies of your poem.  We will work in small groups and then come together for a large group discussion.
